_worlds-first-jet-powered-amish-buggy.webp "AN AMISH BUGGY that would normally be drawn by horses has been fitted with a turbo jet engine. âItâs like oil and water, they should not go together,â jokes its creator Chad Clark. The outrageous project, built by Chad Clark and Mike Monter of Millersburg, Ohio was originally meant to be something very different. âMike and I were at our local county fair, I mentioned it would be really cool to build a turbine-powered four-wheel drive pulling truck,â Chad explained. But the auction description had misrepresented the engine as a turbo shaft engine. âI went home that night, found an engine online and bought it but didnât realise it was not turboshaft, it was turbojet only,â Chad remembers. They ended up having to use a much lighter vehicle instead of the original truck. âWe live in the Amish capital of the world so we figured an Amish buggy would be perfect,â Chad said. Co-creator Mike Monter told Future Studios Cars: âHe called me up, said weâre not doing a pulling truck anymore, weâre doing an Amish buggy â seemed natural.â The build and modifications cost around $30,000 and took roughly 700 hours of labour to complete: âMany all-nighters,â Chad said. When out in public, people struggle to believe the bizarre creation actually works. âWhen people see the Thunder Buggy they canât believe their eyes and the first question is, does it really move? Yes it does,â explained Chad. Traditionally, these buggies would have been moved by horses so this particular one is far from conventional. âThe buggy is not designed to take 100 feet of electrical wiring, fuel tanks and a jet engine,â Chad admitted. With a top speed of 65 miles per hour before the wheels start shaking, this exhibition-only vehicle was not built for speed: âItâs a really simple engine design, itâs some pretty awesome engineering from back in the 40s,â explained Chad.")

_antiques-roadshow-expert-restores-former-chapel-he-bought-for-60k.webp "An Antiques Roadshow expert has bought a former chapel for 60K to convert into a home and workshop - and is calling on others to âsave these historic structuresâ.<br/><br/>Wayne Colquhoun, 60, bought Capel Salem in Corris in Wales - which still had a pulpit with a Bible in.<br/><br/>He says he fell in love with the 1868 romantic slate structure which had fallen into disrepair.<br/><br/>The Grade II listed chapel upkeep became too expensive for the diminishing congregation and was on the market in 2017. <br/><br/>Across Wales, chapels fall into the landscape through disrepair, demolition or âinsensitive conversionâ.<br/><br/>He bought the chapel for ÂŖ60k, transforming the upper gallery into a three-bed apartment, adding floorboards covering half the gallery.<br/><br/>Wayne said: âWhen I bought it the bible was still on the pulpit, as though the congregation had walked out and closed the door.<br/><br/>âWhen people close the doors on old buildings- thatâs the danger point. It gets damp and dry rot sets in.<br/><br/>âThese historic structures are evocative of Welsh history and have to be saved - we need people who will put their heart and soul into them because itâs easy to butcher conversions.â<br/><br/>He aims to maintain the lower space and Canadian pitch pine panelling for use as his Antiques and Fine Art shop, moved from Liverpool, plus a pottery and sculpture workshop.<br/><br/>He aims to keep as many original features of the property as possible, from its single-glazed arched windows to reusing the pews as kitchen work surfaces.<br/><br/>Nearby, three chapels closest to Capel Salem have closed permanently to worship.<br/><br/>Wayne is in the process of transforming the lower level into his antiques and fine art shop. <br/><br/>He hopes to hold talks and workshops in the space, aiming to build up to employing locals and 'giving back' to the community.<br/><br/>Just 500 feet away sits Holy Trinity Church which closed its doors in 2020 not through lack of attendance, but through disrepair.<br/><br/>Neil Sumner chair of Welsh Religious Buildings Trust wrote that the redundancy of chapels in Wales is due to a 19th century âexpansionist fervourâ of Nonconformist Chapels (i.e. Baptists, Congregationalists, Methodists).<br/><br/>In 1800 Caernarfonshire there were 30 chapels, rising to 221 in 1851, representing a 700 per cent increase.<br/><br/>Combining this flurry of builds with the 20th-century fall in attendance, Sumner wrote âthe result is there are now too many buildings for current needsâ.<br/><br/>In an attempt to preserve the character of the increasing chapel conversions, historic environment service Cadw has issued guidelines including keeping the front of the chapels untouched, retaining rooms with self-supporting partitions and allowing âcharacteristic features to show through the new walls and floorsâ.<br/><br/>Meanwhile the Buildings Trust attempt to conserve Welsh chapels through fundraising and management.<br/><br/>After leaving school Wayne went on to become a specialist in the restoration of historic and listed buildings. <br/><br/>Wayne has run an art gallery for over two decades and is an indepe")

_the-pick-up-truck-that-drives-backwards.webp "A FORMER race car driver has built a one-of-a-kind vehicle never before seen on the roads - a 1952 Ford pick-up truck that drives BACKWARDS. Davey Hamilton, from Indianapolis, was struggling to find the truck of his dreams. But having been inspired by his friend in Maine, another former driver who owned a truck, Davey decided to take things one step further. But to build his backwards truck, Davey had to first find a truck with a big back window that could act as a windscreen. Davey told R.Rides: âA lot of the older trucks have really small back windows; they donât have the wide ones. I couldnât find a truck with a big back window. I happened to find this truck three miles from my fatherâs house and knew I had to get it.â The truck had its original body, frames and pedals. âWe had put the lights on obviously, going the wrong direction. I didn't know what to do for bed cover. So, we figured to keep the rustic look.â Davey had to do a lot of work for the truck to work just right. âWe had to cut a hole between the bed of the truck and the cab of the truck for your feet to go in. And so that had to be sealed up so there's no water getting inside the truck.â With the seats in and doors on, the truck still had a little to go before making its road debut. The windshield wipers got installed to make it safe, so the truck had everything thatâs required to get going. âIt looks like it's supposed to go forward. And so, it took some time and to get everything levelled out and make sure that was mounted properly.â And Davey loves his creation for lots of reasons. âNumber one, itâs an attention getter. Number two, it's definitely a fan favourite, number three, it was a lot of work. There's new people that see it every time we take it out and it's definitely a crowd getter.â")
